- The 2S38 is a Self Propelled Anti Aircraft vehicle and a modern Russian short-range air defense system based on the BMP-3 chassis, pairing a 57 mm autocannon with advanced sensors and fire control. The system is part of the Derivatsiya-PVO program and is intended to engage drones, helicopters, and low-flying fixed-wing aircraft with a high rate of fire and programmable ammunition. The vehicle is tracked and amphibious (4 km/h), weighs 21.5 tonnes, and is crewed by three — driver, gunner, and commander — with active suspension. An UTD-29 diesel produces 500 horsepower for 23.3 hp/t and a top speed of 70 km/h forward and 20 km/h reverse, with neutral steering.
The 57mm 2A90 autocannon has a 148-round magazine and fires 3UBM22, BR-281U, OR-281U, and 3UO8 ammunition, supplemented by a 7.62mm PKT machine gun. The turret is stabilized and fitted with a laser warning system, smoke grenades, laser rangefinder, Gen 3 white-hot thermals, and a fire control system with lead and tracking; the commander has a matching CITV. An engine smoke system is available for screening.
