- Description
- The TOS-1A BM-1 is a Rocket Artillery vehicle based on the Russian TOS-1A “Solntsepyok,” a heavy thermobaric and incendiary multiple rocket launcher mounted on a T-72 chassis and used for area suppression and bunker-busting. The system entered service in the 2000s and has seen use in Chechnya and Syria. Weighing 45.3 tonnes with a three-man crew, it is powered by a ChTZ V-84-1 diesel producing 840 horsepower (18.5 hp/t) and reaches 60 km/h forward and 4 km/h in reverse.
The main armament is the 230mm TOS-1A rocket launcher with 24 rounds, firing thermobaric, incendiary, and blast-fragmentation rockets with a 6-second reload between salvos. The launcher is stabilized and has smoke grenades; the gunner is provided with a laser rangefinder, fire control system, and 2x–8x zoom. Commander and gunner turrets are both stabilized for improved laying and observation.
