- Description
- The T-72A is a Main Battle Tank and the first major upgrade of the Soviet T-72 series, fielded from 1979 with a new turret, improved armour, and the 125mm 2A46 gun. Developed at Uralvagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil, the T-72 was intended as a simpler, more numerous complement to the T-64; the A variant introduced better protection and fire control and was widely exported. Crewed by three, the 41-tonne tracked vehicle is powered by a ChTZ V-46-6 diesel (740 hp, 18 hp/t) and reaches 60 km/h; reverse speed remains limited at 4 km/h.
The stabilized 125mm 2A46 is fed by an autoloader (3BM22 APFSDS, 3BK12M HEAT, 3OF26 HE) and is paired with a laser rangefinder, fire control system, and 8x sight. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT and a commander's 12.7mm NSVT round out the armament; smoke grenades and engine smoke are available.
