- Description
- The T-55AM-1 is a Main Battle Tank and a late-Cold War modernization of the Soviet T-55, developed in the 1980s to extend the service life of existing hulls with improved firepower and fire control. The upgrade program added appliqué armour, a new sight and ballistic computer, and the ability to fire the 9M117 laser-guided anti-tank missile from the main gun. Operated by a crew of four, the 41.5-tonne tracked vehicle is powered by a ChTZ V-55V diesel producing 580 horsepower for 14 hp/t and a top speed of 50 km/h.
The stabilized 100mm D-10TS2 cannon is paired with a laser rangefinder and dual-magnification FCS (3.5x and 6.9x), plus a dedicated 8x ATGM sight for guided rounds. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT and a loader-operated 12.7mm DSHK provide secondary armament. The vehicle has smoke grenades and an engine smoke system but no active protection, relying on mobility and improved hit probability from the FCS.
