- Description
- The Sturmtiger is an Assault Gun based on the Tiger I chassis, built by Germany in 1944 in small numbers to mount the 380mm RW61 naval-derived rocket launcher for demolishing fortified positions. Only around 18 were converted; they saw limited use on the Western Front. The 65-tonne tracked vehicle is crewed by five — driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader — and powered by a MB HL230 P45 engine producing 690 horsepower for 10.6 hp/t and 40 km/h, with neutral steering.
The main weapon fires massive 38 cm R Spgr.4581 rocket projectiles with a 42.4-second reload from a limited hull stash of 12 rounds. The loader also has a grenade mortar for frag and smoke. A bow 7.92mm MG34 provides close defense. The Sturmtiger has no stabilizer or rangefinder; the gunner uses a 3x telescope. Its extreme caliber and weight make it a short-range siege asset rather than a frontline tank.
