- Description
- The M4A1 (76) Sherman is a Medium Tank combining the cast-hull M4A1 with the 76 mm M1 gun for improved anti-tank capability. Late-production M4A1s were fitted with the 76 mm in 1944–1945 to match heavier German armour in Europe. The vehicle weighs 32 tonnes and is crewed by five: driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader. The Continental R975-C4 radial produces 400 horsepower for 12.5 hp/t and a top speed of 39 km/h.
Main armament is the 76 mm M1 cannon with HE, AP, APCR, and HVAP ammunition; secondaries are a coaxial .30 cal M1919, cupola 12.7 mm M2, and bow .30 cal M1919. The gunner, commander, and bow positions have stabilizers; the gunner uses a 4x/8x telescope and a 1x/6x periscope without a rangefinder.
