- Description
- The M1 Abrams is a Main Battle Tank that entered U.S. service in 1980 and became one of the defining Western tanks of the late Cold War and beyond. It introduced a gas-turbine engine, Chobham-style composite armour, and a 105 mm gun; later variants (M1A1, M1A2) switched to 120 mm and added improved electronics and armour. In its baseline form the tank is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — on a tracked hull weighing 55.7 tonnes, powered by a Honeywell AGT1500 turbine producing 1,519 horsepower for 27.3 hp/t and 72 km/h.
Main armament is the stabilized 105mm M68A1 with a laser rangefinder, fire control system, and Gen 1 thermals (3x and 9.8x); a coaxial 7.62mm M240, a commander 12.7mm M2, and a loader 7.62mm M240 complete the armament. Smoke grenades and an engine smoke system are fitted for defensive screening.
