- Description
- The Elefant is an Assault Gun, the later designation for the German Ferdinand — a heavy tank destroyer built on Porsche Tiger (P) chassis and armed with the long 88 mm PaK 43/2 L/71; it saw limited use at Kursk and in Italy, where its weight and mechanical issues were notorious. Weighing 65 tonnes with a crew of five — driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader — it is tracked. Twin MB HL120 TRM engines provide 592 hp for 9.1 hp/t and a top speed of 30 km/h in both directions, with neutral steering.
The bow gunner has a stabilized 7.92mm MG34; the main gun has a 5x telescope sight and no rangefinder. The fixed superstructure limits traverse.
