- The ZTZ99A (Type 99A) is a Main Battle Tank and the most capable variant of China’s Type 99 family, introduced in the 2010s with a new powerpack, improved armour, and a fully digital fire control system. It remains in service as one of the People’s Liberation Army’s premier heavy tanks. Operated by a crew of three on a tracked chassis weighing 55 tonnes, it is powered by an HP150 diesel producing 1,500 horsepower for a 27.3 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 75 km/h forward (34 km/h reverse).
The main armament is a stabilized 125mm Type 99A smoothbore fed by an autoloader (22 rounds ready, 17 in the hull), with a coaxial 5.8mm QJT and a commander’s 12.7mm QJC88A machine gun. The gunner has a laser rangefinder, fire control system with lead and tracking, and Gen 3 white thermals; the commander has a separate sight with laser and thermals. The vehicle is fitted with a laser warning system, missile approach warning system, smoke grenades, and an engine smoke system. This vehicle features a single addon: Model 2025. The Model 2025 upgrade costs 1,000 points and equips the ZTZ99A with the GL-6 Active Protection System (APS); this sophisticated system utilises two launchers positioned on either side of the turret, each carrying two charges, to provide comprehensive 360-degree protection against incoming chemical energy (CE) rounds and ATGMs. Furthermore, this modification reinforces the vehicle's flanks by mounting ERA to the hull sides and slat armour near the rear, offering significantly enhanced durability against portable anti-tank weapons and guided missiles.
