- The ZTZ96A (Type 96A) is a Main Battle Tank and an upgraded variant of China’s Type 96, which entered service in the late 1990s as a cheaper complement to the heavier Type 99 series. The 96A added improved armour, a new engine, and better fire control while retaining the same 125 mm gun and three-crew layout. In-game it weighs 42.8 tonnes and is powered by a 12V150ZLD diesel producing 865 horsepower for 20.2 hp/t and a top speed of 59 km/h forward (5.9 km/h reverse).
The main armament is a stabilized 125mm Type 88C smoothbore with an autoloader (22 rounds ready, 17 in the hull), a coaxial 7.62mm Type 86, and a commander’s 12.7mm QJC88A machine gun. The gunner has a laser rangefinder, fire control system with lead and tracking, and Gen 2 green thermals. The vehicle has smoke grenades and an engine smoke system but no laser or missile approach warning systems, reflecting its earlier generation compared to the ZTZ99A. This vehicle features two addons: Improved Ammunition and GL6. The Improved Ammunition addon costs 500 points and replaces the stock Type 1985-I APFSDS with the DTC10-125; this upgrade provides a substantial 131 mm increase in maximum penetration, jumping from 466 mm to 597 mm, which significantly bolsters the ZTZ96A's anti-armour capabilities against modern main battle tanks. The GL6 upgrade costs 500 points and equips the ZTZ96A with the GL6 Active Protection System (APS); this sophisticated system utilises two launchers positioned on either side of the turret, each carrying two charges, to provide comprehensive 360-degree protection against incoming chemical energy (CE) rounds and ATGMs.
