- The T-80BVM is a Main Battle Tank and a modernized variant of the Soviet-era T-80 series, upgraded for Russian service in the 2010s with improved armour, fire control, and the same gas-turbine powertrain that distinguishes the T-80 family from diesel-powered T-72s and T-90s. It has seen operational use with Russian forces and retains the T-80’s reputation for high road speed. Operated by a crew of three on a tracked chassis weighing 47 tonnes, it is powered by a GTD-1250 gas turbine producing 1,250 horsepower for a 26.6 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 70 km/h.
The main armament is a stabilized 125mm 2A46M-1 cannon fed by an autoloader with a 6-second cycle, capable of firing APFSDS, HEAT, HE, and the 9M119M1 laser-guided missile; it is paired with a laser rangefinder, fire control system with lead and tracking, and a second-generation thermal sight with 4x and 12x zoom. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT and a roof-mounted 12.7mm NSVT provide secondary armament, and both the main gun and commander’s cupola have stabilizers. Defensive equipment includes smoke grenades and an engine smoke system; gun elevation is limited to -5° to +15°, giving poor depression over frontal terrain.
