- Description
- The T-64R is a Main Battle Tank and an unusual T-64 variant that retains the 115mm D-68 smoothbore gun instead of the 125 mm weapon fitted to the T-64A and later models. The T-64 was developed at the Kharkiv Morozov Design Bureau and entered service in the 1960s as a technologically ambitious Soviet MBT with an autoloader and compact hull; the "R" (reconstruction) designation applies to older T-64s rebuilt to a common standard, and this variant preserves the earlier 115 mm armament. A three-man crew operates the 36-tonne tracked vehicle, powered by an HPZ 5TDF opposed-piston diesel (700 hp, 19.4 hp/t) for a top speed of 65 km/h.
The stabilized 115mm D-68 is fed by an autoloader (3BM6 APFSDS, 3BK15M HEAT, 3OF18 HE) and is paired with an optical rangefinder, fire control system, and 8x sight. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT provides secondary fire; the commander has a 5x cupola sight but no roof machine gun. Smoke is provided by the engine smoke system only.
