- The T-62M-1 is a Main Battle Tank and a modernized T-62 variant that adds a more powerful engine, laser fire control, and the 9M117 Bastion gun-launched ATGM to the aging 115 mm platform. The T-62 entered Soviet service in 1961 as the first production tank with a smoothbore gun; the M modernizations in the 1980s extended its service life with improved armour, mobility, and guided missile capability. Operated by a crew of four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — the 42-tonne tracked vehicle is powered by a ChTZ V-46-5M diesel (690 hp, 16.4 hp/t) for a top speed of 50 km/h.
The stabilized 115mm U-5TS is loaded manually and can fire 3BM28 APFSDS, 9M117 ATGM, 3BK15M HEAT, and 3OF11 HE; the gunner has a laser rangefinder, fire control system, 3.5x/6.9x main sight, and a dedicated 8x ATGM sight. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT and a loader-operated 12.7mm DShK provide secondary fire; smoke grenades and engine smoke are fitted.
