- The Merkava Mk.1B is a Main Battle Tank and the first production model of the Israeli Merkava family, designed in the 1970s with the engine forward for crew protection and a low, angled hull; it entered service in 1979 and saw action in Lebanon. The vehicle is tracked, weighs 61 tonnes, and is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and is powered by an AVDS-1790-6A diesel engine producing 908 horsepower for a 14.9 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 54 km/h forward and 11 km/h in reverse, with neutral steering.
The main armament is the 105mm Sharir (license-built L7-type) with a 6.7-second reload and M156, M111, M416, and M152 ammunition, plus a coaxial 7.62mm FN MAG 60-40; the commander has a roof 60mm Soltam mortar and a second MAG. The gun has a two-plane stabilizer and a laser warning system; the gunner uses a laser rangefinder, fire control system, and Gen 1 green thermals at 8×, and the commander has a 4×–20× periscope with laser. An engine smoke system is fitted.
