- The Merkava Mk.1B is a Main Battle Tank and the first production model of the Israeli Merkava family, designed in the 1970s with the engine forward for crew protection and a low, angled hull; it entered service in 1979 and saw action in Lebanon. The vehicle is tracked, weighs 61 tonnes, and is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and is powered by an AVDS-1790-6A diesel engine producing 908 horsepower for a 14.9 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 54 km/h forward and 11 km/h in reverse, with neutral steering.
The main armament is the 105mm Sharir (license-built L7-type) with a 6.7-second reload and M156, M111, M416, and M152 ammunition, plus a coaxial 7.62mm FN MAG 60-40; the commander has a roof 60mm Soltam mortar and a second MAG. The gun has a two-plane stabilizer and a laser warning system; the gunner uses a laser rangefinder, fire control system, and Gen 1 green thermals at 8×, and the commander has a 4×–20× periscope with laser. An engine smoke system is fitted. This vehicle features four addons: .50 Coaxial, M413, Smoke Grenades and Chains. The .50 Coaxial addon costs 250 points and equips the gunner with an additional 12.7mm M2 machine gun, significantly improving the tank's effectiveness against infantry and obstructing foliage. The M413 addon costs 500 points and replaces the stock M111 rounds with M413 APFSDS, providing a substantial 74 mm increase in maximum penetration (from 334 mm to 408 mm) for enhanced anti-armor performance. The Smoke Grenades addon costs 150 points and installs 12 smoke grenade launchers on the turret to facilitate rapid obscurement during tactical maneuvers. Finally, the Chains addon costs 50 points and equips the rear of the turret with protective chain mail, offering specialized, albeit minimal, protection against incoming HEAT warheads.
