- Description
- The M4A3 (105) Zippo is a Flamethrower Tank, an M4A3 Sherman fitted with a 105 mm howitzer and an H5 vehicle flamethrower for bunker-clearing and area denial. Such "Zippo" tanks were used by the US Marine Corps and Army in the Pacific and later in Korea and Vietnam. The 31.7-tonne tracked vehicle is crewed by five and is powered by a Ford GAA V8 producing 500 hp for 15.8 hp/t and 42 km/h.
The gunner turret mounts the 105 mm M4 howitzer (HE and M67 shot), a coaxial .30 cal M1919, and the H5 Flamethrower with napalm; the commander and bow gunner have 12.7mm M2 and .30 cal M1919 respectively. The main gun has a 10-second reload and 1x/6x periscope sight with no stabilizer on the howitzer. The flamethrower provided devastating short-range effect against fortifications and infantry.
