The M270 is a Rocket Artillery system, formally the M270 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System), introduced by the U.S. Army in the 1980s to deliver area fire with 227 mm rockets. It shares the same M269 launcher pod as the wheeled HIMARS but is tracked for better cross-country mobility. Weighing 24 tonnes, it is crewed by three — driver, gunner, and commander — and is tracked. The VTA-903T diesel produces 600 horsepower for 25 hp/t, 64 km/h top speed, and neutral steering.
The only armament is the 227 mm M269 launcher with a choice of M26 and M31 rocket types in low, medium, and high charge; the launcher has 10 deg/s horizontal and 8 deg/s vertical traverse and a 1x sight. No secondary weapons or smoke systems are listed.
