- Description
- The M1IP (Improved Performance) is a Main Battle Tank representing an upgraded M1 Abrams with improved turret armour and other modifications introduced in the mid-1980s before the 120 mm M1A1. The baseline M1 entered U.S. service in 1980 with a 105 mm gun and a gas turbine engine. Weighing 55.7 tonnes, it is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and is tracked. The Honeywell AGT1500 turbine produces 1,519 horsepower for 27.3 hp/t, 67 km/h forward and 38 km/h reverse, with neutral steering and an automatic transmission.
Main armament is the 105 mm M68A1 rifled gun with APFSDS, HEAT, and HEP; a coaxial 7.62 mm M240 and a cupola 12.7 mm M2 provide secondary fire, and the loader has a 7.62 mm M240. The turret has a stabilizer, a fire control system, a laser rangefinder, and Gen 1 green thermals (3x/9.8x and 8.6°/2.58° thermal fields of view). Smoke grenades and an engine smoke system are fitted.
