- Description
- The M17 Whizbang is a Medium Tank based on the M4 Sherman chassis, armed with the 7.2 in T37 rocket launcher in addition to the standard 75 mm M3 gun, providing both direct-fire and area saturation capability in the style of the better-known Calliope. The nickname "Whizbang" came from the sound of the rockets. The 30.6 t vehicle is crewed by five (driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, loader) and is powered by a Continental R975-C4 radial engine producing 460 hp for 15 hp/t and 39 km/h.
The 75 mm M3 fires M61 and M48; the 7.2 in T37 carries 20 rockets. A coaxial and bow .30 cal M1919 complete the armament. The gunner has a stabilizer and 3x telescope plus 1x/6x periscope with no rangefinder or FCS; commander and bow positions are stabilized.
