- The M109 is a Self-Propelled Howitzer and the backbone of Western artillery since the 1960s, built on a tracked chassis with a fully traversable turret housing a 155 mm M185 (M126) howitzer. It has been upgraded through multiple variants (M109A1–A7) and remains in service with the United States and many allies. The 24.1 t vehicle is crewed by four (driver, gunner, commander, loader) and is powered by an 8V71T diesel producing 405 hp for 16.8 hp/t and 56 km/h.
The 155 mm howitzer fires a wide range of M107 and M110 charges with HE, VT, and PF fuzes, with 12 rounds in the turret and 16 in the hull and a 13 s reload. A 12.7 mm M2 is mounted on the commander's cupola for local defense. The gunner has a 4x telescope and periscope with no rangefinder or FCS; the commander position has a stabilizer. The M109 is designed for indirect fire from prepared or march order positions rather than direct combat.
