- Description
- The Leopard 2K (T11) is a Main Battle Tank and the prototype or pre-series variant of what became the Leopard 2 family, developed in West Germany in the 1970s. The 2K featured the new 120mm Rh120 L/44 smoothbore and a commander’s 20mm Rh202 autocannon for anti-aircraft and light vehicle engagement, a combination later dropped on production 2A-series tanks. Crewed by four on a tracked chassis weighing 55.4 tonnes, it is powered by an MTU MB 873 Ka-501 diesel producing 1,500 horsepower for 27.1 hp/t and 72 km/h. The main gun is stabilized and has a laser rangefinder, fire control system with lead, and 8x–16x optical zoom (no thermals). A coaxial 7.62mm MG3 and a loader 7.62mm MG3 round out the armament. Smoke grenades are fitted; the 2K represents the high-mobility, firepower-focused philosophy that led to the production Leopard 2A0 and beyond.
