- The Challenger 2 is a Main Battle Tank that succeeded the Challenger 1 in British service from 1998, with a new turret, 120mm L30A1 rifled gun, and improved armour including the Dorchester composite package. It has seen operational use in Iraq and remains the UK's primary MBT. The 64 t tracked vehicle is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and reaches 56 km/h forward and 38 km/h reverse. The Perkins CV12 diesel produces 1,314 hp for 20.5 hp/t and is mated to an automatic gearbox.
Main armament is the stabilized 120mm L30A1 with L27A1, L31A7, and L34A2 ammunition; a coaxial 7.62 mm L94A1 and a loader 7.62mm L37A2 are fitted. The gunner has a laser rangefinder, 3x–10x day sight, and Gen 2 thermal sight with FCS and lead; the commander has a laser sight. Smoke grenades and an engine smoke system are standard. This vehicle features two addons: Dorchester 2E and TES. The Dorchester 2E addon costs 250 points and equips the Challenger 2 with additional ERA on the LFP and the hull sides, increasing overall protection for the hull. The TES (Theatre Entry Standard) addon costs 1,000 points and equips the Challenger 2 with ASPRO-HMT ERA and slat armor, significantly improving chemical energy (CE) protection across the entire vehicle. The TES suite also features an IED jammer, which provides protection against C4 explosives. Furthermore, it replaces the loader’s 7.62mm machine gun with a CROWS featuring an M2 .50 Caliber machine gun and a full suite of modern optics and FCS; this increases the loader’s overall lethality and provides enough firepower to clear trees and other environmental obstacles.
