- The Centurion Mk.5 AVRE is a Support Vehicle — an Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers variant of the British Centurion, armed with the L9A1 165mm demolition gun for breaching fortifications and clearing obstacles. The Centurion AVRE saw extensive use from the 1960s onward, including in Northern Ireland. The 52.2 t tracked vehicle carries a crew of five — driver, gunner, commander, loader, and one passenger — and reaches 35 km/h forward. The Rolls-Royce Meteor 4B diesel produces 650 hp for 12.5 hp/t. The L9A1 fires L33A1 ammunition with a 22.6 s reload; a 7.62mm L3A1 machine gun and smoke grenades are fitted. The gunner has a 6x sight without rangefinder; the commander has a stabilized cupola with 6x sight. Neutral steering aids maneuverability in confined terrain.
