- Description
- The AH-64D is an Attack Helicopter and the Longbow variant of the AH-64 Apache, fielded by the United States and allies from the late 1990s with a mast-mounted millimeter-wave radar and improved avionics. The Apache family was designed for anti-armour and armed reconnaissance and has seen extensive combat.
The crew of two — pilot and co-pilot/gunner — operate a 30mm M230E-1 chain gun under the co-pilot’s station (1,200 rounds) and AGM-114K Hellfire II ATGMs (eight rounds); the pilot’s station carries LAU-105A pylons with AIM-9M air-to-air missiles and M229 Hydra-70 rocket pods (38 rockets). The co-pilot has a stabilizer, laser rangefinder, FCS with lead and tracking, and Gen 2 thermals (3×–63.5× zoom); both stations have laser and missile warning systems, and the pilot can deploy flares. The AH-64D remains one of the most capable attack helicopters in service.
