The M4A3 (105) is a Medium Tank variant of the American M4 Sherman armed with a 105 mm howitzer for infantry and fortification support. The M4A3 series used the Ford GAA gasoline V8 and was the principal variant supplied to U.S. Army units in the latter part of the war; the 105 mm M4 howitzer version saw use in the Pacific and in Europe for bunker-busting and indirect fire. The vehicle weighs 31.7 tonnes and is crewed by five: driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader. The Ford GAA V8 produces 500 horsepower for a 15.8 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 42 km/h.
Main armament is the 105 mm M4 howitzer with HE and HEAT-type rounds, backed by a coaxial .30 cal M1919, a cupola 12.7 mm M2, and a bow .30 cal M1919. The commander and bow gunner positions have stabilizers; the gunner uses a 3x telescope and a 1x/6x periscope with no rangefinder.
