- Description
- The T-72B (1989) is a Main Battle Tank and a late-production T-72B representing the 1989 standard, with improved armour and the 9M119 Refleks gun-launched ATGM system. The T-72B entered Soviet service in 1985 and became the principal Soviet MBT of the late Cold War; the 1989 configuration reflects the final Soviet-era upgrades before the T-72B3 and other post-Soviet modernizations. A three-man crew operates the 44.5-tonne tracked vehicle, powered by a ChTZ V-84-1 diesel (840 hp, 18.9 hp/t) for a top speed of 60 km/h.
Main armament is a stabilized 125mm 2A46M with autoloader, firing 3BM42 APFSDS, 9M119 Refleks ATGM, 3BK18M HEAT, and 3OF26 HE; the gunner uses a laser rangefinder and fire control system with a dedicated 8x ATGM sight for missile guidance. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT and a commander's 12.7mm NSVT provide secondary fire; smoke grenades and engine smoke are fitted.
