- Description
- The T-72B is a Main Battle Tank and the principal Soviet T-72 variant of the late 1980s, introducing Kontakt-1 ERA, a more powerful engine, and the 9M119 Refleks ATGM capability. The T-72B entered production in 1985 and formed the backbone of Soviet and later Russian and export armored forces; it saw combat in numerous conflicts and remains in service in upgraded forms. A three-man crew operates the 44.5-tonne tracked chassis, powered by a ChTZ V-84-1 diesel (840 hp, 18.9 hp/t) for 60 km/h.
The stabilized 125mm 2A46M is fed by an autoloader and can fire 3BM32 APFSDS, 9M119 Refleks ATGM, 3BK18M HEAT, and 3OF26 HE; the gunner has a laser rangefinder, FCS, 8x main sight, and a dedicated 8x ATGM sight for missile guidance. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT and a commander's 12.7mm NSVT provide secondary fire; smoke grenades and engine smoke are fitted.
