- The T-80UM-1 "Bars" is a Main Battle Tank and an upgraded T-80U variant fitted with the Arena active protection system. The T-80 line was the Soviet Union's first series-produced gas-turbine-powered tank, developed at the Kirov Plant in Leningrad; the UM-1 modernization added hard-kill APS to improve survival against ATGMs and top-attack threats. Operated by a crew of three — driver, gunner, and commander — the tracked vehicle weighs 47 tonnes and is powered by a GTD-1250 gas turbine producing 1,250 horsepower for a 26.6 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 70 km/h forward.
Main armament is a stabilized 125mm 2A46M-1 cannon with autoloader, fed with APFSDS, HEAT, HE, and 9M119 gun-launched ATGM, supported by a laser rangefinder, fire control system with lead computation, and 2.7x–12x magnification. A coaxial 7.62mm PKT and a commander's 12.7mm NSVT provide secondary fire; the Arena APS fields 32 launchers with a 0.04 s reaction time and intercepts projectiles between 70 and 1,000 m/s, with laser and missile approach warning systems for cueing. Engine smoke and smoke grenades round out defensive options.
