- Description
- The Challenger 1 is a Main Battle Tank that entered British Army service in 1983, replacing the Chieftain and seeing combat in the Gulf War. It was built by Royal Ordnance (later Vickers) and combined the Chieftain's 120mm L11A5 gun with a new hull, improved armour, and a Perkins CV12 diesel. The 62.5 t tracked vehicle is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and reaches 56 km/h forward and 38 km/h in reverse. The CV12 develops 1,314 hp for a 21 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and neutral steering.
Main armament is the stabilized 120mm L11A5 with laser rangefinder and FCS (10x day, lead); secondary weapons are the coaxial 7.62mm L8A2 and commander 7.62mm L37A2. Smoke grenades and an engine smoke system provide defensive screening.
