- The Type 16 MCV is a wheeled Tank Destroyer developed by Japan for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, entering service in 2016 as the Type 16 Maneuver Combat Vehicle. Designed for rapid deployment to outlying islands and road-mobile anti-armour operations, it trades heavy armour for strategic mobility on a wheeled chassis. Weighing 26 tonnes, it is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and reaches 100 km/h forward and 36 km/h in reverse. The MHI 4VA diesel produces 570 horsepower for a 21.9 hp/t power-to-weight ratio.
Main armament is the 105mm JSW cannon with a 5.5-second reload, supported by a coaxial 7.62mm Type 74 machine gun. The fire control system includes a laser rangefinder, third-generation white-hot thermals, lead computation, and zoom levels of 4x, 13.3x, and 26.7x. The Type 16 is fitted with a laser warning system, stabilizer, and smoke grenades for self-defense.
