- Description
- The T-44 is a Medium Tank developed by the Soviet Union in 1944 as the successor to the T-34, introducing a transverse-mounted engine, torsion-bar suspension, and a lower silhouette while retaining the 85mm ZIS-S-53 gun until the T-44-100 and T-54 replaced it with 100 mm armament. Production was limited; the design led directly to the T-54. The 31-tonne tracked vehicle is crewed by four and powered by a ChTZ V-44 diesel (520 hp, 16.8 hp/t) for 59 km/h.
Main armament is the 85mm ZIS-S-53 with a coaxial 7.62mm DT-28; the gunner has a 4x telescope and no stabilizer or rangefinder. The driver has a separate 7.62mm DT-28 in a ball mount. The T-44 trades raw firepower for better protection and mobility than the T-34-85.
