- Description
- The T-34-85 is a Medium Tank and the principal wartime upgrade of the Soviet T-34, entering service in 1944 with a new three-man turret and the 85mm ZIS-S-53 gun to counter heavier German armour. It became the definitive T-34 variant and remained in use worldwide for decades. The 32.2-tonne tracked vehicle is crewed by five — driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader — and powered by a Model V-2-34 diesel (500 hp, 15.5 hp/t) for 55 km/h.
Main armament is the 85mm ZIS-S-53 with a coaxial 7.62mm DT-28; the gunner has a 4x telescope and no stabilizer or rangefinder. The bow gunner operates a second 7.62mm DT-28. The T-34-85 trades the original 76 mm gun's rate of fire for better penetration and a dedicated commander role, improving target acquisition and crew efficiency.
