The Object 166 is a Main Battle Tank based upon the Soviet T-62, the first serial tank to field a smoothbore main gun and a 115mm caliber that set the pattern for later Soviet MBTs, its experimental feature is the 36 rocket boosters strapped to the sides which allow the tank to fly. Entering service in 1961, the T-62 saw widespread export and combat use into the late twentieth century. The vehicle is tracked, weighs 38 tonnes, and is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and is powered by a ChTZ V-55V diesel engine producing 580 horsepower for a 15.3 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 50 km/h forward and 7 km/h in reverse. The rocket boosters have a 60 second cooldown.
The main armament is the 115mm U-5TS smoothbore cannon with an 8-second reload and 3BM3, 3BK4, and 3OF11 ammunition, plus a coaxial 7.62mm PKT; the gun is stabilized and the gunner has 3.5× and 7× magnification with no laser rangefinder. The commander has a stabilizer and a 5× sight. An optional 9M14 Malyutka ATGM addon is available, and an engine smoke system is fitted.
