- Description
- The M4A1 Sherman is a Medium Tank and the first major production variant of the M4 series, recognizable by its cast, rounded upper hull. Built in large numbers from 1942, it saw service in North Africa, Italy, Normandy, and the Pacific. It weighs 30.6 tonnes and is crewed by five: driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader. The Continental R975-C4 radial engine produces 460 horsepower for a 15 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 39 km/h.
Armament is the 75 mm M3 gun with HE and AP, a coaxial .30 cal M1919, a cupola 12.7 mm M2, and a bow .30 cal M1919. The gunner, commander, and bow positions have stabilizers; the gunner uses a 3x telescope and a 1x/6x periscope without a rangefinder.
