- The M1A2 SEP is a Main Battle Tank and an upgraded variant of the M1 Abrams, introducing the System Enhancement Package with improved digital architecture, commander’s independent thermal viewer, and better situational awareness. The M1A2 entered U.S. service in the 1990s and the SEP upgrades have kept the platform relevant into the 21st century. Operated by a crew of four on a tracked chassis weighing 62.2 tonnes, it is powered by a Honeywell AGT1500 gas turbine rated at 1,519 horsepower for a 24.4 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and 68 km/h top speed.
The stabilized 120mm M256 is the main gun, with a laser rangefinder, fire control system with lead, and Gen 2 thermals; a coaxial 7.62mm M240 and a commander 12.7mm M2 in a remote station with FCS and tracking provide secondary firepower, and the loader has a 7.62mm M240. Smoke grenades and an engine smoke system are standard; optional TUSK II adds urban combat kit such as slat armour and crew protection.
