- Description
- The Churchill VII is a Heavy Tank and the final major production variant of the British Churchill infantry tank, introduced in 1944 with thicker armour and a cast turret. The Churchill series, built by Vauxhall Motors, served from 1941 through the Korean War and was valued for its ability to cross difficult terrain and absorb punishment. The Mk VII weighs 41 tonnes and is crewed by five — driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader — on a tracked chassis. A Bedford 12-cylinder diesel produces 350 horsepower for 8.5 hp/t and a modest top speed of 20.4 km/h forward and 2.5 km/h reverse, with neutral steering.
Main armament is the 75 mm OQF Mk.V with M48, M89, and M61 ammunition; secondary weapons are 7.92 mm BESA machine guns in coaxial and bow mounts, and the loader has a grenade mortar for smoke and fragmentation. The tank is fitted with an engine smoke system. Sights are a 3x telescope for the main gun and 1x for the bow and loader stations; the bow gunner position is stabilized.
