- Description
- The Chieftain Mk.12 is a Main Battle Tank and a late upgrade of the British Chieftain series, which served as the UK's primary MBT from the 1960s into the 1990s. The Chieftain was renowned for its powerful 120mm L11A5 rifled gun and heavy frontal armour, though the Leyland L60 multi-fuel engine remained a weak point. The 57.2 t tracked vehicle is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and reaches 48 km/h forward. The Leyland L60 V2 diesel produces 840 hp for a 14.7 hp/t power-to-weight ratio.
Main armament is the 120mm L11A5 with a stabilizer, fed with L31A7, L23A1, and L34A2 ammunition; a coaxial 7.62mm L8A1 and a commander 7.62mm L37A1 round out the armament. The gunner has a laser rangefinder, 10x main and thermal (Gen 2) sights, and a 7x backup sight, with a full fire control system and lead computation. Smoke grenades provide defensive screening.
