- Description
- The Challenger 2 Medusa is a Main Battle Tank variant of the British Challenger 2, adding laser warning, missile approach warning, and DIRCM for improved survivability against guided threats. The base Challenger 2 entered British service in 1998 and remains in use with upgraded optics and armour. The 64 t tracked vehicle is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and reaches 56 km/h forward and 38 km/h reverse. The Perkins CV12 diesel produces 1,314 hp for 20.5 hp/t.
Main armament is the 120mm L30A1 rifled gun with L31A7, L26A1, and L34A2 ammunition, plus a coaxial 7.62 mm L94A1. The gunner has a laser rangefinder, 3x–10x day sight, Gen 2 thermal sight, and 10x backup sight; LWS and MAWS are fitted. Stabilizer and smoke grenades are standard, along with an engine smoke system.
