- Description
- The Black Night is a Main Battle Tank and an advanced Challenger 2-derived variant fitted with the Streetfighter II remote weapon station and an active protection system. The name refers to the British Army's Challenger 2 upgrade program and night-fighting capability. The 65 t tracked vehicle is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and reaches 56 km/h forward and 38 km/h reverse. The Perkins CV12 diesel produces 1,314 hp for 20.2 hp/t.
Main armament is the 120mm L30A1 with L27A1, L31A7, and L34A2, plus a coaxial 7.62 mm L94A1 and a loader 7.62mm L37A2. The vehicle has an APS (2 launchers, 2 charges each), stabilizer, and smoke grenades. The gunner has a laser rangefinder, 3x–10x day and Gen 3 thermal sights with FCS and lead; the commander CITV has Gen 3 thermals and tracking. An engine smoke system is fitted.
