- Description
- The BTR-60PB is an Armoured Personnel Carrier and the first Soviet eight-wheeled amphibious APC to enter large-scale production, replacing the BTR-152 and BTR-40 in frontline units from the early 1960s. Designed at the Gorky Automobile Plant, the BTR-60 family was built in large numbers and exported widely; the PB variant added a fully enclosed troop compartment and a small turret. The vehicle weighs 10.3 tonnes and carries a driver, gunner, commander, and eight passengers; it is wheeled and amphibious, achieving 80 km/h on land and 4 km/h in water. Twin GAZ-49B diesel engines produce 180 horsepower combined for 17.5 hp/t.
The gunner turret mounts a 14.5 mm KPVT and a coaxial 7.62 mm PKT with mouse-aim traversal; the commander has a separate 5x sight. The main sight offers 2.6x magnification with no rangefinder. Light armour and high mobility suit it to ferrying infantry rather than direct combat.
