- Description
- The BMP-2 is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle that succeeded the BMP-1 in Soviet service during the 1980s, trading the low-pressure 73 mm gun for a stabilized 30mm 2A42 autocannon with high elevation for engaging infantry and low-flying aircraft. It became one of the most widely used IFVs of the Cold War and remains in service in many countries. The 14.5 t tracked hull is amphibious (65 km/h on land, 7 km/h afloat) and powered by a UTD-20 diesel producing 300 hp (20.7 hp/t), with a crew of three and seven passengers.
Armament includes the 30 mm cannon and 7.62mm PKT, with optional 9M113 Konkurs (or 9M113M) ATGMs; the gunner has a 6× sight and the commander a 5× cupola sight, with stabilizers but no laser rangefinder or thermals. An engine smoke system is fitted for defensive screening.
