- Description
- The 90mm GMC Super Hellcat is a Tank Destroyer and an upgunned variant of the M18 Hellcat, mounting the same 90mm M3 cannon used on the M26 Pershing in place of the standard 76 mm gun. The change gave the lightweight chassis much greater anti-armour punch at the cost of added weight and slightly lower power-to-weight. Operated by a crew of five on a tracked hull weighing 22 tonnes, it retains the Continental R975-C4 engine at 460 horsepower for 20.9 hp/t and a top speed of 80 km/h.
The 90mm M3 is served by 4x and 8x telescope sights without a rangefinder; the commander has a stabilized 12.7mm M2 for anti-aircraft use. The Super Hellcat combines the Hellcat’s mobility with heavy-tank-level firepower in a light, fast package.
