- Description
- The 120S is a Main Battle Tank and a hybrid design that mates the turret of the American M1A2 Abrams (with 120mm M256 cannon) to the hull of the M60 Patton. The concept was proposed to offer NATO-standard firepower and fire control on a lighter, cheaper chassis; the 120S designation reflects the 120 mm smoothbore. The vehicle weighs 56.3 tonnes and is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — on a tracked hull. An AVDS-1790-9 diesel produces 1,200 horsepower for 21.3 hp/t and a top speed of 61 km/h forward and 32 km/h reverse, with an automatic transmission and neutral steering.
Main armament is the 120 mm M256 with M830A1 proxy/PD, KE-W, and M1028 rounds in a 16+16 ready/semi-ready rack, plus a coaxial 7.62mm M240 and a commander's 12.7mm M2. The turret is stabilized and has smoke grenades, a laser rangefinder, Gen 2 green thermals at 3x and 10x, and a fire control system with lead.
