- Description
- The StuG III G is an Assault Gun and the most produced variant of the German Sturmgeschütz III, built on the Panzer III chassis with a fixed casemate mounting the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 anti-tank gun. It became one of the most effective German armored vehicles of the war by role and numbers. The 23.9-tonne tracked vehicle is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and powered by a MB HL120 TRM engine producing 296 horsepower for 12.4 hp/t and 40 km/h.
Main armament is the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 with PzGr 39, PzGr 40, and Sprgr. 34 ammunition and a 6.25-second reload; the gunner has a 5x telescope and no stabilizer or rangefinder. The loader operates a 7.92mm MG34 for anti-aircraft and local defense. The low silhouette and potent gun made the StuG III G a cost-effective tank destroyer and infantry support vehicle.
