- Description
- The Panther G is a Medium Tank and the final major production variant of the German Panther series, built from March 1944 until the end of the Second World War. The Ausf. G introduced a simplified hull with a single-piece side plate, improved driver's hatch, and chin mantlet to reduce shot traps; over 2,900 were produced, seeing heavy use on both Eastern and Western Fronts. The 44.3 t tracked vehicle is crewed by five — driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader — and is powered by a MB HL230 P30 petrol engine producing 600 hp for 13.5 hp/t and a top speed of 46 km/h, with neutral steering for tactical maneuvering.
Main armament is the long-barreled 75 mm KwK42 firing AP and HE, supported by three 7.92 mm MG34 machine guns (coaxial, bow, and commander's cupola). The gunner has a 2.5x/5x telescope sight with no rangefinder or stabilizer; the commander and bow positions have stabilizers, and smoke grenades are fitted for defensive screening.
