- Description
- The Panther D is a Medium Tank and the first production variant of the German Panther, deployed from mid-1943; it suffered from teething problems and a slow turret traverse that were addressed in later models. Weighing 44.3 tonnes, it is crewed by five: driver, gunner, bow gunner, commander, and loader. The MB HL230 P30 diesel produces 600 hp for 13.5 hp/t and 46 km/h forward.
Main armament is the 75 mm KwK42 with HE and AP (PzGr 39/42, PzGr 40/42), plus coaxial 7.92mm MG34; the turret has smoke grenades. The gunner has only a 2.5x telescope and no rangefinder or stabilizer, and turret traverse is a slow 6 deg/s — the Panther D rewards careful positioning and first-shot accuracy rather than dynamic engagements.
