- Description
- The M60A2 Starship is a Main Battle Tank variant of the M60 series, fielded by the United States in the 1970s with a low-profile turret and the 152 mm M162 gun-launcher capable of firing conventional rounds and the MGM-51B Shillelagh wire-guided missile. The combination was intended to engage armour at long range, but the system proved complex and the variant was phased out in favor of the 105 mm M60A3. The 51.9 t vehicle is crewed by four (driver, gunner, commander, loader) and is powered by an AVDS-1790-2 diesel producing 750 hp for 14.5 hp/t and 48 km/h.
The M162 can fire HEAT (M409A1), HE (M657A2, M625A1), and Shillelagh; a 7.62 mm M240 is coaxial and a 12.7 mm M85 is commander-mounted. The gunner has a laser rangefinder and FCS with 1x/8x magnification but no thermals; stabilizer and smoke grenades are fitted, and an engine smoke system is available.
