The M41A1 is a Light Tank, representing the U.S. M41 Walker Bulldog family developed in the late 1940s as a successor to the M24 Chaffee and standardized in the early 1950s for reconnaissance and cavalry formations. Thousands were built for the U.S. Army and allies during the Cold War, and upgraded M41A1 variants saw extensive overseas service. Operated by a crew of four — a driver, gunner, commander, and loader — it rides on a tracked chassis with a combat mass of 23.1 tonnes. An AOS-895-3 diesel engine delivers 500 horsepower for a power-to-weight ratio of roughly 21.6 hp/t, with an automatic four-speed transmission, neutral steering, and a top speed of 72 km/h forward and 19 km/h in reverse.
The primary armament is the 76mm M32 cannon in a turret without a gun stabilizer, served by main and backup optical sights with 6× and 8× magnification and no laser rangefinder. A coaxial 7.62mm M1919A4E1 machine gun supports close targets, while a roof-mounted 12.7mm M2 provides additional suppressive and anti-aircraft capability from the commander’s station.
