Developed at Uralvagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil, the T-72 was intended as a simpler, more numerous complement to the T-64; the A variant introduced better protection and fire control and was widely exported. Crewed by three, the 41-tonne tracked vehicle is powered by a **ChTZ V-46-6** diesel (740 hp, 18 hp/t) and reaches 60 km/h; reverse speed remains limited at 4 km/h. The stabilized **125mm 2A46** is fed by an autoloader (3BM22 APFSDS, 3BK12M HEAT, 3OF26 HE) and is paired with a laser rangefinder, fire control system, and 8x sight. A coaxial **7.62mm PKT** and a commander's **12.7mm NSVT** round out the armament; smoke grenades and engine smoke are available.
