Description
: The **T-44** is a Medium Tank developed by the Soviet Union in 1944 as the successor to the [T-34](/md/rv/vehicles/t-34.md), introducing a transverse-mounted engine, torsion-bar suspension, and a lower silhouette while retaining the **85mm ZIS-S-53** gun until the [T-44-100](/md/rv/vehicles/t-44-100.md) and T-54 replaced it with 100 mm armament. Production was limited; the design led directly to the T-54. The 31-tonne tracked vehicle is crewed by four and powered by a **ChTZ V-44** diesel (520 hp, 16.8 hp/t) for 59 km/h.
Main armament is the **85mm ZIS-S-53** with a coaxial **7.62mm DT-28**; the gunner has a 4x telescope and no stabilizer or rangefinder. The driver has a separate **7.62mm DT-28** in a ball mount. The T-44 trades raw firepower for better protection and mobility than the [T-34-85](/md/rv/vehicles/t-34-85.md).
