Description
: The **Object 279** is a Prototype Main Battle Tank, a Soviet heavy tank design from the late 1950s built for operations in extreme terrain and nuclear battlefields; its four-track, lenticular hull earned it the nickname "Kotin moon rover" and only one prototype was completed before the program was cancelled. The vehicle is tracked, weighs 60.4 tonnes, and is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — and is powered by an **UTMZ 2DG-8M** diesel engine producing 1,000 horsepower for a 16.6 hp/t power-to-weight ratio and a top speed of 55 km/h forward and 18 km/h in reverse.
The main armament is the **130mm M-65** gun with a 10-second reload and OF-482M and BR-482B ammunition in a mechanized and hull rack; a **14.5mm KPVT** is mounted for anti-air and anti-personnel use. The main gun has a two-plane stabilizer and is served by an optical rangefinder and an 8× fire control sight; the commander has a stabilizer and a 5× sight. An engine smoke system is fitted for defensive screening.
